Meet Dr. Vasily Ottovich Falk. An aesthete, a pedant, a skeptic, a complete bore—and an investigator by necessity. In a dacha settlement on the Finnish Gulf coast, where he moves in summer from St. Petersburg, an elderly widow is found dead. A day before her death, she complained to Falk that at night a gray monk appears in her garden—a faithful harbinger of death.
