When you’re just about to be discharged from the army, and you’re mistakenly thrown into the hottest spot—namely Chechnya—you could shed a manly tear of sheer bad luck, the kind that no one can cry harder. Yet Lieutenant Mudretsky, the commander of the chemical defense platoon, is characterized by healthy, typical army indifference.
