Kalle Fletcher was very young when her mother took her from Alaska to the civilized world of Toronto. Isolation and extreme temperatures were unbearable for the pilot’s wife, who was used to the conveniences of a big city. Now Kalle is twenty-six, and the father who stayed in Alaska has long been a past she was afraid to remember. But now it’s time to make the difficult journey back to the border town where she was born. Bad weather, mosquitoes, short daylight hours, and sky-high prices are what Kalle has to put up with if she wants to be closer to her father. She’s accompanied by Jon—quiet and proud pilot—who doesn’t immediately accept a foreign girl, too tender for life in extreme conditions. Unlike Kalle, Jon can’t imagine himself anywhere else on the planet and would never trade snowy mountains for anything else. He can’t wait for the capricious girl to finally leave him alone and go where she belongs. Maybe Jon is right—but Kalle can’t wait to knock him off his feet. Time passes, and she realizes she’s grown attached to the grumpy pilot. Now something like friendship—or even more—binds them, though neither of them can admit it. In the end, Kalle will return to Toronto, and Jon will remain in Alaska. It would be foolish to fall in love with someone you’ll never be able to be with. Right?
