Zagreb, summer of 1991. Ten-year-old Ana lives a carefree life: she rides her bicycle with her best friend Luka, takes care of her little sister Rahela, and loves falling asleep to the thrilling stories her father tells her. But this life ends when a civil war breaks out in Yugoslavia. Ana loses her parents, and her sister is evacuated to America, where a foster family will care for her. Ana manages to save herself, but ten years later, living an entirely different life in New York, she will realize that she must return—to find her home, to learn what happened to the people close to her, to survive the painful memories, and finally move on by coming to terms with her past.
