Book 1 of the cycle. More than 2,000 years ago, the world of Sangomara merged with a semi-material world of demons and gained magic. Now, in these harsh lands, people and countless demons are trying to coexist—each in their attempts to adapt has taken on the most diverse forms. A naive kind-hearted young fisherman, who as a child by sheer chance linked his soul with an old demon of the Sleepy Lake—Kelpie—gets pulled into a chain of twists and turns. His personal happiness collapses, his mother’s long illness hangs over the family like a shadow, and around the mountain village a pack of winter-starved ghouls prowls.
