An N town lives a measured, unhurried life. Behind it are the terrifying years of ruin, the Civil War—the country of Soviets moves toward a bright future. The residents of N work at a flax mill, fall in love, marry, read newspapers, go to the cinema, just like all citizens of the Soviet Republic.
But a streak of bloody crimes suddenly disrupts the usual course of life.
Someone kills young women, choosing only natural blondes.
Investigation officers of the Criminal Investigation Department are at a loss, trying to track down and catch the unknown villain—whom, with a light hand of a local newspaper columnist, everyone soon nicknamed the Butcher (Potrositel).
The case takes a serious turn: attention is drawn in Moscow. In the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs, they decide to send to assist local comrades the investigator Ivanov on the most important cases—young, but very experienced. He will surely figure out what’s going on.
But even he won’t be able to understand right away who this mysterious killer is. How many secrets are hidden in the case of the county’s Butcher? When did it all begin? How will it end?
