Year 246 of the new world, where life is governed by the rules of usefulness of the individual to society after an ecological catastrophe. Everything about your future is determined by a computer, turning a person into numbers on a screen. Equality? Definitely not for people like us. Monsters, distorted, feeble. In other words—disabled, or “Defectives.”

In this world, Cassidie and other children are forced to live and grow up, desperately unwilling to accept the stereotypes. The truth and the lies, faith and betrayal, strength and weakness—one contradiction after another. Maybe the new world is defective, too? A broken doll always gives way to a whole one. Is it impossible to shift a mountain by removing one grain of sand? They say if you scream into emptiness long enough, you can go hoarse—or hear something back.
