«Дар» (1938) is Vladimir Nabokov’s last completed Russian novel and one of the most significant, multi-layered novels of the 20th century. Created longer and more painstakingly than any of his other Russian books, it absorbed an extraordinarily rich and diverse material, held in a harmonious balance through the skillful composition of the whole. «The Gift» is dedicated to several years in the life of the young emigrant Fyodor Godunov-Cherdyntsev—the period in which his writer’s gift is formed—but in terms of space and time it goes far beyond the limits of 1920s Berlin, where the action takes place.
