The goal is to disrupt the covert transfer of equipment and troops along the river in order to delay the attack on his native stanitsa. For the main character, this act of sabotage is also a desperate attempt to find traces of his missing son, whose unit disappeared somewhere along these same banks. A nighttime ambush on an enemy patrol boat becomes the beginning of a brutal guerrilla war on the water, where every shot is a step toward salvation or death.
