The heroes of these stories exist inside a bubble of their own reality. Outside, huge catastrophes and small partings happen; conflicts thunder; rare species of birds disappear; famous landmarks are erased from memory. The characters notice changes and, clinging to symbols of the past, at the same time remain themselves—becoming alien elements in an environment that is neither hostile nor friendly. It’s just that they are all, on their own, the heroes in life and life in the heroes. This is not about finding yourself, but about how much you have merged with your surroundings—and whether that merging is even necessary.
