It was a real floating city with streets, gardens, squares, movie theaters, concert halls, fountains, pools, sports grounds, and greenhouse gardens with tropical plants. Along the endless corridors, Persian carpets muffled the sound—trained servants in uniform glided almost silently.

The doors of cabins, the walls, and the panels glowed with red wood and flashed with polished brass. In the passenger areas there was a distinctive scent—a mixture of expensive perfumes, soap, cigars, leather suitcases, and something else, elusive, probably brought in with the fresh breath of the ocean.”
