American millionaire J. Preston Peters, cursed with gastritis, has a lovely daughter Eileen and a unique collection of ancient Egyptian scarabs. And recently he’s become a neighbor of Lord Emsworth.

The neighbors met, and Eileen and Freddy (the younger son of the owner of Blandings Castle) became friends—and a few days ago they got engaged, thus relieving Lord Emsworth of his only and biggest burden. But happiness didn’t last long—exactly until the moment when a pearl from Peters’s collection disappeared from his house: a scarab beetle (Cheops of the fourth dynasty). Then something unimaginable starts happening at Blandings Castle. In the dark, whistling bullets fly, and a fake servant conquers the heart of an equally fake maid.
