Inspector of the criminal police Ingvar Stübbe investigates a series of terrible murders in Oslo. The victims are a TV show host, a leader of a political party, a writer, and an athlete. The killer challenges the police, clearly hinting at the motive: the TV host has her tongue cut out, and for the writer a priceless pen sticks out from his eye. The inspector’s wife, Inger Johanne Vik, recalls that thirteen years ago, at a lecture on criminal psychology, she heard about an analogous series of crimes. Its finale was a burning of the police inspector’s house.
Will Ingvar Stübbe manage to stop the killer if the latter intends to bring his “remake” to the end?
