Boris Vasiliev’s epic novel “There Were and There Were Not” is dedicated to Russia liberating Bulgaria from Ottoman rule (1877–1878). The appearance of Russian troops in Bulgaria sparked a rise in the national liberation struggle of the Bulgarian people. It was a struggle against all kinds of tyranny—which explains the mass heroism of Russian and Bulgarian soldiers and officers. The joint fight for a just cause had a huge influence on the spiritual formation of the Russian intelligentsia. This main idea of the novel is embodied by its main characters—members of the Olexins’ large family, direct participants in the events depicted. The young Olexins’ search for truth and justice reflects the difficult quest that was so characteristic of the advanced youth of that time.
