Escaping death at the stake of the Inquisition, the free pilot Pop ends up aboard an Imperial destroyer engaged in battle against forces superior to the enemy. Trying to get used to the new world, he is hired as a cook on a transport ship—unaware that it is precisely that ship, or rather its cargo, that has become the object of attention of the Brotherhood, a pirate alliance in this galaxy. Its ruler, Emperor Number Twenty-Seven, intends to redraw the map of the universe based on his vision of a new world order—and by leaving his opponents no other choice, forces them into a fight against the forces of the Imperial Fleet.
