Two literary novellas that accompany the second volume of “The History of the Russian State” tell the fates of two small “pawns” in a great game of Empires. Manul is the tenner of the Batu Khan’s army; Yashka Shelma is a petty thief, a fraudster, and a trickster. For a brief moment, both became “queens” in order to accidentally overturn the course of world history.
