One of the most famous novels by Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) is “Anne of Green Gables.” The novel was published in 1908 and immediately won readers’ love. It tells the story of eleven-year-old orphan Anne Shirley, who goes to live with a lonely brother-and-sister couple, Matthew and Marilla, on their Green Gables farm. Through her kindness, openness, and daydreaming nature, the girl can win over even the most cold-hearted and strict people. Soon the farming family realizes how dull and monotonous their lives were without Anne. Even in the early 20th century, the book gained great popularity, and it continues to be published in many countries to this day. Films were made from the novel, and even cartoons. The Anne house-museum on Prince Edward Island is constantly visited by crowds of fan tourists. Illustrations by Maria Ryazantseva. For middle-grade school age.
