Description
The second part of Tamara Petkevich’s memoirs “Life—an Odd Shoe Pair” came out under the title “Against the Backdrop of Stars and Fear” and became a continuation of the first book. The narrative covers the years after liberation from the camp. Everything that was left unsaid—unfinished destinies, incomplete portraits, broken threads of human relationships—has found its completion.

The freedom that she had long dreamed of in the barracks returned the right to a normal life and became the beginning of a new chapter, but it didn’t избавила either from the terrifying ghosts of the past or from the pain caused by the impossibility of getting back what captivity had taken away forever.

The book was published in 2008, fifteen years after the first part came out, and went through a number of reissues; it was translated into German. A stage production was mounted in St. Petersburg based on the book, and Tamara Petkevich became a laureate of several literary prizes: “The Steep Staircase,” “Petropolis,” and the Gogol Prize.

After reading the book, Tatyana Gerdt said: “I’m a very happy person—God sent me wonderful people all the time. But in my life I’ve had only two shocks from people: Tvardovsky and Tamara Petkevich. This isn’t camp literature. It’s Russian literature. It’s what gives strength to live.”
