The novella tells of the tragic fate of young serf peasant Anas'ta. Her father died; her mother sent her to serve a landowner. The only one who truly loved her was the landowner’s little daughter. Then Anas'ta’s brother, Kostik—who became head of the family after their father’s death—forced his sister to marry his wealthy friend Prokudin, to whom she was repulsive. In that marriage she was miserable. One day, Anas'ta met Stepan, who was also unhappy in family life. They fell in love with each other.
