The second part of Alexander Afanasyev’s cycle “The Burden of Empire” is a fantasy action novel set in an alternative 20th century. In the far south of the Arabian Peninsula, in a small federation of tribal principalities, against the backdrop of more than twenty years of confrontation between Russia and Great Britain, the Cold War continues. The arms race goes on and only accelerates, and new developments created “for the sake of peace” turn into dangerous consequences again and again. Among them are the first guided aerial bombs, which must be tested in a real operation. The test is assigned to a military pilot, Prince Shakhovsky — and what a possible success of the mission will lead to remains to be guessed.
