The Battle of the Itil shattered the age-old trade route from Rus’ to Khazaria, forcing people to look for other opportunities. Arriving in the land of merians for tribute, Sveneld passes on the proposal of King Olav: in spring, organize a campaign along the Volga to Bulgar in order to establish new connections. But when the old way of life collapses, not everyone agrees on what should replace it. Realizing the value that merian land brings, its elders try to break free from the rulers of Holmgarð. At the center of events is Dag’s family—the most respected man among the Rus’ of Merymaa: the eldest son Arnor goes into the eastern forests on a “feint-at-arms” expedition, leading to unexpected and dangerous results; his daughter Arnæid becomes a very advantageous bride, and the struggle for her brings together people who, without these events, would never have met.
