Ponson du Terrail Pierre Alexis (1829–1879) — a French novelist, author of sensational novels, mainly on criminal themes. The cycle tells of the struggle for the French crown in the 16th century and ends with the accession of King Henry IV. The St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre was the culmination of a chain of events: the Treaty of Saint-Germain, which ended the Third Religious War in France, the wedding of Henry of Navarre to Marguerite of Valois, and the failed assassination attempt on Admiral Coligny. Catherine de Medici planned her daughter’s marriage to Henry of Navarre, the future King Henry IV. But neither the Pope, nor the Spanish king, nor the most ardent Catholics of France shared Catherine’s policy.
