A few years ago, a young merchant Ulvar went to sea and disappeared. His wife, Snefried, wishing to find him, sets out for the Eastern Sea. The goddess Freya promises her protection on this journey: they share one misfortune—Freya herself is also in an endless search for her beloved, Oda. In the first house where Snefried stops, she is taken for Freya herself, and that sets off a chain of astonishing events: Snefried must experience Freya’s adventures in her own way, fighting now with the norns, now with Vikings, and with an old curse—trying, with the powers given to her, to make the world a better place. But Snefried’s fate is only the field on which another round of the battle between Odin and Freya unfolds—a duel between an inspired mind and the riddle of life and love. Snefried’s journey through the sea—from Sweden to Rus’—is tightly intertwined with stories from Asgard that Freya herself tells, stories about the persistence of a woman’s soul in the fight for love.
