The fortunes of war bring cadet Vorontsov and his comrades-in-arms to the forests near Yukhnov and Vyazma, where the encircled units of the 33rd Army are fighting desperately. The Abwehr also dispatches a group under Major Radovsky, belonging to the Brandenburg-800 formation, to the same area. Their mission — posing as a Soviet reconnaissance unit sent from the "mainland" — is to gain the trust of the commander of the encircled army and lead the headquarters group to German lines, with a view to subsequently organizing collaborationist formations along the lines of the ROA.
