The Death Predictor

This was a perfectly ordinary morning for Colonel Lev Gurov. But everything changed the moment he stepped over the threshold of his apartment: right in front of him on the stair landing lay a corpse of the neighbor upstairs. The body wasn’t even cold yet—apparently, the killer was in a hurry to flee before Gurov even left. And the killer had also left a completely incoherent message: a wall inscription that read, “Only in part, on the basis of all norms, is normal.” A jumble of words at best…

The situation is unpleasant, but Gurov has no intention of taking up the investigation of this murder. Not yet… Before the colonel can get back to business, another murder occurs. It seems to have nothing to do with the death of Gurov’s neighbor. But there is one detail: an inscription is found next to this body as well. And again, some kind of nonsense: “Our deeds in the very manner of actions lie on”. Apparently, this is all part of a single message. But for now it’s too little to piece together the whole picture. And with each passing day, Gurov realizes more and more clearly—this message is addressed specifically to him.
