At the end of the 9th century, a truce was concluded between the Danes who had captured northern England and the West Saxon king Alfred, who ruled in the south. But peace still wasn’t there. As before, Vikings came sailing to the island for plunder from the mainland, and the fragile balance was ready to shatter at any moment. Now, the Norwegian earls Sigfrid and Eric have seized London—the city belonging to Alfred. The king orders his commander Uhtred, half-Dane and half-Saxon, to retake the city from the invaders and present it as a gift for his daughter Aethelflaed’s wedding. The Christian king doesn’t care what terrible price the pagan Uhtred will have to pay for his victory—and Alfred effectively deprives him of help.
