In a number of languages—among some Australian tribes and among the peoples of the North—there is a special grammatical tense called the “non-future”: mystical events happen “now” and “already,” while the future remains far away and vague. A miracle lives in the present, while pretending to be the coming.
The characters of Vladimir Berezin, familiar to readers from “SNT” and “The Osoaviakhim Pentagram,” along with Vladimir Raevsky, become witnesses to a transformed present that branches like paths in a Borges garden. Here victory belongs not to the Bolsheviks, but to the Tolstoyans, and coffee is declared forbidden—as if it were a drug. On the northern plain rises a concrete wolf; in the calm waters of the city hides the Tsar of Fish; death comes for chess players, demanding the completion of an old game; and the harmonica player keeps humanity from the mad schemes of a dreadful little goblin. And over everything, aloof and silent, from a pedestal, gazes the bronze Rosenthal.
It’s possible that what seems strange and fantastically conditional today will become familiar tomorrow. Such is the law of demiurgic writers—and the world has already seen similar transformations more than once.
