A modern-day person finds himself in the Dark Ages. The ancient world is dead, and the Middle Ages are only just beginning. The Roman Empire is strong and fighting the Persians in the east. Its population calls itself the Roma(i) and has no idea it is living in Byzantium. The empire cannot control its former lands, and so powerful, predatory kingdoms of the Franks, the Goths, and the Lombards have arisen there. From the deep, remote forests, the Slavs come out ever more boldly and sweep into new lands in a rushing tide.

The main character ends up in the worst possible situation: he is a slave, and by local laws he is “speaking property.” Will he be able to use the knowledge and skills given to him by life in the twenty-first century, or will he remain in captivity? There is a chance—and a sizable one. The harsh life of that time provides extraordinary opportunities…

Many thanks to Dmitry Alekseev, who on his resource collected excellent material about life in the Middle Ages, managing a household, and the weaponry of that era.
