World War II. Noa is a sixteen-year-old girl who has lost a child—abandoned by her parents. She finds shelter at a small train station. One day, Noa saves a baby from a train car that is headed straight to a concentration camp.
Astrid is an aerial gymnast, a Jewish girl whom her Nazi husband threw out because of her origins. She returned to her home town and joined Herr Neuhoff’s circus to hide from persecution.
Fate brings the two heroines together when Noa and Theo, fleeing the Nazis, end up in the circus—where the kind Herr Neuhoff agrees to shelter the poor girls in exchange for them performing on the flying trapeze. Dislike and distrust between Astrid and Noa grow into a strong friendship that will have to be tested. Will their friendship hold when the secrets of the past rise between them?
