Eugénie Grandet

Language Russian
The provincial Anjou wine-grower Père Grandet is very rich and extraordinarily miserly, but he lives modestly, saving on everything. Everyone in the small town of Saumur guesses the true size of his fortune. There is only one person to whom Grandet is somehow attached—his only 20-year-old daughter, Eugénie. She grows up in solitude, which one day is broken by a visit from a Paris cousin, the young handsome Charles Grandet. The young Parisian is sent to Saumur by his father Victor, Grandet’s brother, who asks that his son be taken care of. Soon it becomes clear that Victor Grandet is ruined and has committed suicide, unable to bear the shame. His only son, a spoiled dandy of high society, now has nothing; he is desperate. Grief over the loss of his beloved father is shared by Eugénie, who is in love with Charles. The strict Père Grandet wants to get rid of his penniless nephew as soon as possible, sending him off to the colonies.
