General Field Marshal Rumyantsev’s army defeated the Turkish troops in Northern Rumelia and crossed the Balkans. The Sublime Porte requested peace, and on July 10, 1774 it was concluded in the town of Küçük-Kainarj(i). Catherine II’s first Turkish war, which brought glory to Russian arms, ended for the Russian Empire with a great victory. Nevertheless, the threat to its southern lands from the Turks remained, and the Turks themselves did not hide that they were preparing for revenge. After routing the enemy, the Russian army withdrew from Rumelia, Wallachia, and Moldavia back to its own territory. Most of its forces now stayed near the Dnieper, protecting Novorossia. A certain company of Captain Egorov’s chasseurs had no time for a peaceful rest. Exactly their skills in skirmish marksmanship in loose formation are needed by the empire right now. Company, to battle!
