They checked the reported fact and—making sure it was indeed true—that there was no way out, they woke the head.

And then everything spun on an adult level. Many factors indicated that the case was bad: the disappearance of the road, forest strips along it, power lines, the absence of lights on the horizon—indeed, even off to the side of the city nothing was shining—loss of mobile connection, uncharacteristically close stars, and an unnaturally bright moon. In short, the head suspected right away that things smelled like kerosene, and when it started to get light and on the side where the city was supposed to be there was nothing, he was completely convinced of it.
