Description
A man, having put on a corrugated cardboard box with slits for his hands and a peephole with a curtain, hides in this box from surrounding reality. But he expects a reciprocal reaction as well: the surrounding world must not touch him in any way. The difficulty, however, is that society does not release the box man from its tenacious embrace, and strange relations with the world around him begin. Hence several semantic layers of the novel: first we read the notes of the box man himself, then it turns out that he is a drug addict and perhaps all this is his hallucination, a false box man appears on the horizon, and it is no longer clear who is writing these notes; somewhere there arises the feeling that Kobo Abe himself is hiding from everyone in a box. In short, not everything is so simple in this metaphor-filled novel. In parallel, a detective plot develops, which makes the novel read in one breath.
