Late autumn, cold, endless Siberian taiga. Anna Sterkhova, an experienced Moscow investigator, arrives in a small northern settlement of gold miners, Seversk. The last ferry across the icy Yenisei, exhausting impassable roads, and oppressive unknownness—so her assignment begins.

A chain of bloody events leads Sterkhova far back into the past—to a secret society, the disappearance of a young teacher, and the loss of two people in the taiga.
