1904. In Moscow, titular adviser Vladislav Sergeyevich Shchelkоv disappears. His search is assigned to Ivan Volovtsov, an investigator in particularly important cases. Witnesses claim that not long before his disappearance Shchelkov was extremely displeased with something. His office is turned upside down, as if someone had been searching for something. One of the janitors noticed that on the day of the disappearance an unknown man about fifty years old left the house. Perhaps that was the criminal.
