On the shore of the ancient Italian lake Bracciano, where it smells of mud and wet feathers, the Colombo family settles. The young woman Antonia takes care of four children and her husband, who is disabled, all by herself. A constant struggle with the imperfection of the world makes her proud and uncompromising. She raises her only daughter Gaia with strictness and teaches her to hope only in herself.
The little red-haired girl turns out to be very capable. She learns: to be strong, not to complain, to read books, to dive into the lake even when the current pulls her down to the bottom, to hide her mother’s phone in a shoebox, and to bury her despair somewhere no one and never will be able to find.
“Water in the lake is never sweet”—a complex family drama in which, as in life, there is still room for glimpses of happiness.
