Moscow, academic year 1996–1997. Kostya’s parents die before his eyes, and his classmate Marina regularly suffers violence from her stepfather. Support and protection come from the childless class teacher whom her husband brutally beats. Three misfortunes intertwine into one bundle of events and feelings: scattered, frightened people find one another strength and protection. The book contains a great deal of pain, but school joy and a teenager’s lightness of perception help the reader cope. And even if the happy ending may seem banal, it is extremely necessary both for the characters and for the reader—like an anti-burn ointment.
