Vyacheslav Alexandrovich Kalikinsky is a journalist and prose writer, author of historical novels, and a member of the Union of Writers of Russia. He is widely known for his book series “Agasphere”—five captivating spy retro-detectives dedicated to the work of counterintelligence in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We present, in audio format, the next major work by the writer—one of his best—dedicated to the fate of a real historical figure. Karl Landsberg, a brilliant officer, made a mistake and became a criminal, but ultimately, through repentance and many hardships, he brought considerable benefit to our country. There is a version that Landsberg became the prototype of Rodion Raskolnikov, the main character of F. M. Dostoevsky’s famous novel “Crime and Punishment,” although, of course, the biographies of the book character and his likely prototype differ greatly.

Karl Landsberg shone in high society in Saint Petersburg. He was promised a rapid career—up to a ministerial post. He collapsed down the career ladder without even reaching the middle. The glittering world disappeared behind the grim walls of prison. Following both the verdict of the court and of society, the criminal world passed judgment on Landsberg—the men who are today called “thieves in law.” Yet Landsberg manages to avoid the inevitable, seemingly certain death at their hands.

In the final book of the series, Karl Landsberg joins the militia—because the Russo-Japanese war is underway. He will have to pass through many more trials on the path to full pardon. Listen to the conclusion of this fascinating story..
