“Book and Sword” is the legendary usya novel by Jin Yong, the master of Chinese historical fantasy. The author is rightfully considered one of the pillars of the “three-legged usya” (usya triumvirate): record print runs, dozens of films and series, and video games created based on the plots of his works brought Jin Yong worldwide fame.

The novel “Book and Sword” takes place during the Qing dynasty era under Emperor Qianlong (1735–1796). The main plotline is built on the opposition between the emperor’s power and the Red Flower Order, whose activities are aimed at overthrowing the Manchu Qing government. All members of the Order, led by the noble Chen Jialuo, are celebrated masters of martial arts for whom any injustice becomes an immediate call to action. They come to the aid of an Islamic tribe and return a sacred book for Muslims—the Quran—stolen by mercenaries. In gratitude, the tribe leader’s daughter, the beauty Huo Qingtong, presents Chen Jialuo with an unusual dagger, whose secret he will still have to uncover.

The author skillfully weaves together stories of fictional and real historical characters (Emperor Qianlong, the military commander Zhao Huai, the “fragrant concubine” Xiangfei—an analogue of Princess Kasili), making readers empathize with the heroes and follow the plot’s development without missing a step. The eternal struggle of good and evil, flawless kung fu, a lost city in the desert, the secret of the emperor’s origins and the daring actions of the Red Flower Order, love and revenge—these are only part of what you’ll find in “Book and Sword.”
