From the legacy of long-gone peoples and states, we have only fragments of civilizations: stones used to build dwellings and tombs, debris of pottery and wall paintings, household utensils and ornaments, weapons and objects of worship. In most cases we don’t even realize what these items were used for. But in the hands of archaeologists, these objects gain a voice and tell us what kind of people lived many hundreds and thousands of years ago, what their way of life was like, and what passions were boiling in their minds and hearts.
