A Debt Paid with Blackmail

Late at night in a Moscow resident Yana Bystrova’s apartment, a phone call rings. Her childhood friend Daria Slepіanskaya, who lives nearby, asks—through a strange voice—for a large sum of money borrowed for an urgent operation for her husband. Yana rushes to lend the money selflessly, but Daria doesn’t even let her into the apartment: she snatches the bewildered Bystrova’s money right out on the stair landing, reaching her hand through the door with a gloved hand and shutting the door immediately. In the morning Yana learns that Daria’s husband, Nikita, has just returned from a business trip—while Daria with two little children has vanished without a trace… Not long after, when Yana enters their unlocked apartment, she finds dead Nikita on the couch… With the help of her faithful friend Margosha, who came to visit, Yana begins an investigation of her own in parallel with the police—one that nearly costs her her life… Read by the author.
