The novel by Finnish writer and journalist Martti Larni was published in 1957 and to this day has gone through several editions in Finland.
The events of the novel take place in the United States of America, where the author visited in the postwar years. However, Lärni does not seek to provide a comprehensive depiction of American life. “The Fourth Vertebra” is a biting satire of certain aspects of the American “way of life”; the writer portrays the morals of America of our days using mostly hyperbole and caricature.
The translation of this original witty book by Martti Lärni will introduce the Soviet reader to a memorable work of modern Finnish literature.
