Description

Georgiy Venus—descendant of German foundry workers who moved to Russia in the 18th century—met the First World War as a warrant officer. He was wounded twice and awarded the Knight’s Cross. Even then, army reality forced him to see many things in a different light. The romantic pedestal on which youthful ideals were built wobbled. Later, Georgiy Venus joined the ranks of the Volunteer Army and was assigned to Drozdovsky’s volunteer officer regiment. Under Denikin, and later under Wrangel, the “Drozdovites” fought in the most responsible sectors of the front and became famous for their cruelty. The novel “Sparrows in Livery” tells about the events of that time, in which Georgiy Davydovich Venus himself was a direct participant.
