Everyone knows how hard life is for a ruler. For which ruler? Any ruler! A king, a tsar, an emperor—or even a tribal leader—problems are the same. Once, Emperor Jared Thirteenth, the rightful ruler of the demon empire Assarsh, learned that the deity his troublesome subjects had been worshipping for the last several thousand years had decided to pass the power to a successor. It turns out gods have that happen too… who would’ve thought? Even more: the old man had already sent a request and now expects—any day now—whoever will replace him as the supreme deity of Assarsh.

Meanwhile, life goes on: subjects weave intrigues, wives demand new precious jewels, and the beloved eldest daughter demands a fiancé. Luckily, with sons there are almost no problems: they can just fight quietly and that’s fine. But who will the new deity become for him, Jared? A helper and support—or yet another problem? And what kind of strange name is that—Mortimer?…
