Description
“The Golden Cup” is a novella by German romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, considered the peak of the first period of his work. The original version appeared in 1814, and in 1819 his revised version was published.

Hoffmann called the novella a fairy tale. It is one of the transformations of the fairy-tale genre introduced into literature by the romantics. The events unfold in Dresden on the day of the Ascension of the Lord, with many realities of German everyday life familiar to the writer of that time, and with characteristic features of the social psychology of the characters.
