The main feature of B. Polevoy’s work is that it is permeated with a life-affirming faith in the spiritual strength of the Soviet person. He knows how to highlight in his heroes civic-mindedness, courage, inner purity, and honesty, as well as enormous life resilience in any, even the hardest, situations.
These qualities characterize the heroes of “Gold”—Marusya Volkova and the experienced bank employee Mitrofan Ilyich Koretsky—who save state values, carrying them out of the occupied city right under the noses of the fascists.
