In the late 19th century, rich gold deposits were found on numerous tributaries of the Amur. Driven by need, whole villages of settlers went into the taiga to wash for the noble metal. Many of them formed so-called “brother republics”—associations of prospectors with their own unwritten laws and rulers. The novel “Gold Fever” tells the story of life in one of these “republics.”
