The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos (St. Basil’s Cathedral) is the main church of Red Square and of all Moscow. It was built in the middle of the 16th century by order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of the Kazan Khanate—a part of the former Golden Horde. On October 1, 1552, on the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the assault on Kazan began and ended in victory for the Russian army.
In the novel “The Architects,” besides describing the construction of this miracle of Russian architecture, you’ll also find an account of the life of the capital during Ivan the Terrible’s reign, of the heroism of the Russian people, and of the formation of the many-faced, multiethnic Russian state.
