Description
“The Winter Road” is a gripping historical novel by Leonid Yuzefovich, a three-time winner of the “Big Book” award. At the center of the plot is a little-known episode of the Civil War in Yakutia and the clash between two prominent figures: the White general, a seeker of truth, and poet Anatoly Pepelyaev, and the Red commander, an anarchist, and the future writer Ivan Strod.

The drama of historical events is heightened in this book by the exceptional style of narration. Leonid Yuzefovich remains impartial toward the historical events, yet he treats both heroes with sympathy and respect. He draws no conclusions and offers no final summation, leaving readers to judge for themselves what is happening. In “The Winter Road” there are all the ingredients of great literature: fateful battles amid Yakutian snow, courage, despair, passionate love, destructive ideals, and fatal tragedy.
