“The Winter of Our Discontent” (1961) is John Steinbeck’s last novel—unbelievably modern and relevant, even though its action takes place in the 1960s in New England, in a fictional small town. The main character is Ethan Allen Hawley, a descendant of a once very wealthy family, a World War II veteran, an educated, decent, and honest man—who ends up in a difficult position. He is forced to work as a salesman in a grocery store. For Ethan, accustomed to a completely different life, it isn’t easy to accept such a fall. Then he makes a deal with his conscience in order to regain his former status and place. However, the dishonest machinations that return him wealth do not make him happy.
